How to Get More Traffic to Your WordPress.com Blog

Using WordPress.com to host your blog comes with many advantages over using self-hosted blogs. One advantage is that users benefit from extra traffic coming from the WordPress community. In addition, there are several things you can do to drive more traffic to your WordPress blog.

Tweak your WordPress settings

Check your privacy settings to make sure that your blog is visible to search engines. Different themes have different settings and features – check your blog theme for available options. Make sure that you check the boxes to optimize your blog for mobile and iPad users.

Tag your posts

Attaching tags to your posts not only helps people to find your blog, it also means that you could be featured in the tag listings at WordPress.com. Avoid using too many different tags, as this can negatively affect your chances of appearing in the tag listings. You should aim to use around 6-8 different tags.

Get listed

Blog directories like Technorati keep categorized lists of blogs and use a ratings system to rate the popularity and usefulness of blogs. Get your blog listed in as many directories as possible, including those for mobile devices.

Blog regularly

Keep your blog fresh and regularly updated in order to stay relevant. Posts don’t always need to be full length or detailed pieces – try posting brief updates or links to videos, resources, and content that you think will interest your readers.

Get connected

Connect your WordPress blog to your social networking accounts, such as Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Additionally, turn on sharing buttons for all available services to allow your visitors to share your content.

Comment on other blogs

Comment on other blogs related to your topic of choice. Post comments that are useful and respectful, but avoid spamming other blogs with self-serving links. People are more likely to view your profile and click through to your blog if your comments are interesting.
